WAR MEMORIAL – The Ecclesiastical Commissioners have promised to hand over a portion of the Churchyard at St. Barnabas to the Parish Council as a site for the War Memorial.
On Sunday 11 December 1921, Boughton War Memorial was unveiled and dedicated. The following report of the event appeared in the Faversham and North East Kent News on Saturday 17 December 1921:
Speeches by Lt. Col Philip Neame V.C. and Canon Maxwell Spooner.
A poignant and anonymous letter to the editor appeared directly below the report of the unveiling ceremony.
THE MEN WHO RETURNED
To the Editor, “Faversham News”.
Sir, - Do we remember sufficiently THE MEN WHO RETURNED when we think and speak of those who gave their lives during the Great War, at the unveiling of the various War Memorials?
The Memorial in this village was unveiled yesterday, and while generous references were made to those who had fallen, no reference was made to the body of ex-Service men belonging to the district, who were formed up to do honour to their fallen comrades. Are we ungrateful, or only careless?
Yours truly,
“ONE WHO REMEMBERS”
(and who lost a son).
